CRIME NEWS

  • A judge granted a change-of-venue motion for Sheldon Timothy Herrington—accused of killing University of Mississippi student Jimmie Jay Lee—after he argued that heavy news coverage would prevent a fair trial; his retrial is scheduled for October 13 while a new venue remains to be determined.  WJTV

  • A record of Miss Mississippi pageant winners shows titleholders from 1933 to 2024 — four of whom later became Miss America. The list details winners and marks a rich pageant history for the state.  Hattiesburg American

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jones College recently honored the Top of Class 2025 at Oak Grove High School—valedictorian Katy Weir will study pre-med at the University of Alabama and salutatorian Arron Yang plans to pursue engineering at Michigan. Quitman High School’s top students include valedictorian Holden Turner, who will study industrial electricity at Reid State Technical College, and salutatorian Zoe Rush, who is set to enlist in the Army to train as a combat engineer.  WDAM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Asian needle ants have been reported in Mississippi and are found in moist, shady areas near homes and parks. Their sting hurts more than fire ant bites—triggering severe allergic reactions that urge residents to be cautious when outdoors.  Hattiesburg American

  • Registration is open for the Hattiesburg football league and cheer program — local athletes and cheerleaders are invited to join the new season — and anyone interested should register as soon as possible.  WDAM
  • Hattiesburg Parks and Recreation is now accepting registrations for youth tackle football and cheer programs for kids ages 5 to 12 offering weekly practices and Saturday games in the fall (registration closes July 18). Kids can sign up online or at the Ben McNair Center every other Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and the uniform fee is $70.  WDAM
