COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Reona Burnett is renovating a former hotel on U.S. 49 into the MS Hub Complex to give the unhoused in Hattiesburg meals, showers, and computer access. The project will roll out in phases starting with offices and showers by summer (later plans include a bistro and event space to create job opportunities while volunteers help clean up during National Volunteer Week April 21-26).  WDAM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local leaders and tax experts are split on a new tax law that cuts income and grocery taxes while raising gas taxes by July 1. Some say the plan will boost funds for roads and city services, but others worry it could hurt low-income residents — leaving many questions about its long-term impact.  Hattiesburg American

HEALTH NEWS

  • Public health officials said that whooping cough is rising in Mississippi while childhood vaccination rates dropped from 99% to 97.5% after a court ruling allowed religious exemptions. They warn that lower immunization may put children at risk for measles—officials are teaching doctors about the threat—and urge parents to check that caregivers are vaccinated.  Mississippi Today
  • A report by the Center for Mississippi Health Policy (using a study by the Hilltop Institute) said Mississippi could lose up to $5.4 billion or even $16 billion in Medicaid funds over 10 years if Congress lowers the tax on hospitals. Tens of thousands of people may lose their health coverage and many hospitals may face major revenue losses if these cuts move forward.  Mississippi Today
