COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5397 — along with Farmed Fresh for Mississippi — handed out free turkeys, hams and other food to families in downtown Hattiesburg on Saturday morning. The Hattiesburg Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity also distributed up to 500 turkeys to help families facing food insecurity and the government shutdown.  WDAM
  • The Ford Foundation hosted the second annual Turkey Trot at Town Square Park on Saturday in Hattiesburg to raise scholarship funds for its Build Better Scholars program for single parents and their children—featuring a 5K race and a one-mile fun run.  WDAM
  • Community groups are spreading holiday cheer downtown Hattiesburg today with festive events and seasonal displays that include music & lights. Local organizers aim to bring residents together through family-friendly celebrations throughout the area.  WDAM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hattiesburg welcomed its 68th large-scale mural Friday—'Legacy in Service'—which honors generations of area service members and future leaders at the Pine Burr Area Council headquarters overlooking Hardy Street in the Hattiesburg Avenues. The piece is part of a growing public art collection that now exceeds 100 works and has expanded steadily since 2020.  WDAM
  • Hattiesburg unveiled its latest public art installation today at a downtown location. City officials said the work is meant to brighten the area and bring neighbors together—more details will be shared at upcoming events.  WDAM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mississippi Children’s Museum unveiled its new Inchy’s Bookworm Vending Machine on Thursday with support from Atmos Energy’s Fueling Safe and Thriving Communities program—child visitors earned tokens through reading events to exchange for books. The machine took five months to complete and features a custom design with books chosen for different age groups.  WLBT

SPORTS NEWS

  • USM lost to South Alabama 42—35 on Saturday at Hancock Whitney Stadium. Quarterback Braylon Braxton threw for 400 yards while Jaguars' running back Kentrel Bullock ran for 187 yards and three touchdowns—setting up a winner-take-all game with Troy University next Saturday.  WDAM
  • The Lady Eagles won 86-60 over Nicholls State and kept their unbeaten record, boosting their season standing.  WDAM
  • Southern Miss football lost 42-35 to South Alabama as a poor rushing attack and lack of turnovers helped the Jaguars build a big lead. Coach Charles Huff said the team must improve and beat Troy on Nov. 29—if they hope to win the Sun Belt West Division.  Hattiesburg American
