- ➤ Southern Pine Electric held its annual membership meeting in Taylorsville on November 13th; members gathered at 9:30 a.m. to meet with management, and groups like Covington County Hospital & Mississippi State University’s cybersecurity mobile unit attended while door prizes, including a retired fleet vehicle, were raffled. - ➤ Hub City Humane Society is working to help local pet owners keep their pets by launching programs that offer temporary financial assistance and pet care advice. The organization plans to support families facing economic challenges and aims to prevent pet relinquishments during this tough period. WDAM
- ➤ The United Way of the Pine Belt Region began setting up Prancer Path in Laurel on Thursday — ExxonMobil Pipeline employees helped move and decorate Library Street as the event is set to open on Nov. 25, with any donations supporting future editions. WDAM
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ On November 13th, the Mississippi Arts Commission awarded $4 million to 17 organizations for repairs, renovations, and new construction at community arts centers statewide — including a $400,000 grant for upgrades at the Hattiesburg Welcome Center, and all grantees have two years to finish their projects. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Mississippi Department of Education reported that 85% of third graders passed the reading test for the 2024-25 school year—a rate very similar to last year's but slightly lower than pre-pandemic levels. Students get three chances to score at least a 3 to advance to fourth grade, and those who do not pass after three tries are held back. Mississippi Today
- ➤ Today, PRCC Forrest County campus paused to remember and honor servicemembers by holding a memorial event that brought together students and staff to reflect on their sacrifices—organizers said the event aimed to pay tribute to those who served our country. WDAM
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ After the longest federal shutdown ended earlier this week, the Mississippi Department of Human Services resumed full SNAP benefits so that recipients from the 14th to the 21st get complete payments while those from the 4th to the 13th will receive the remainder of November’s benefits soon—December benefits will be issued as scheduled. - ➤ NASA and L3Harris Technologies conducted a 500-second RS-25 engine hot fire test on November 12 at Stennis Space Center in Hancock County, reaching 111% of its rated power level + the engine will power the SLS rocket’s four RS-25 engines for NASA’s Artemis V mission. WDAM
- ➤ The Mississippi Department of Transportation announced lane closures along two sections of Interstate 59 starting Monday from Moselle to McPhail Road—crews will begin final asphalt work at 6:30 a.m. with work expected to finish in 10 days, including additional closures near the U.S. 49 interchange.
