  • Master Sgt. Mark Jordan, who served over 20 years in the Air Force, was named Hattiesburg’s 2025 Veteran of the Year for his community service and support to schools and vulnerable groups — local officials praised his servant leadership.  WDAM
  • Marine Corps veterans and a local business have joined forces to support a Christmas event that will cheer Hattiesburg kids—bringing festive hope to families during the holiday season.  WDAM

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The USM College of Business honored local business leaders at an annual awards luncheon held Friday at Southern Miss—presenting top honors to Keith and Melissa Saucier as Entrepreneurs of the Year. Retired Army general Steve Ainsworth was named Alumnus of the Year and Ashton Williams received Young Alumnus of the Year—underscoring the university's dedication to recognizing business growth in our community.  WDAM

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Hundreds of Monarch butterflies are staying on Cat Island instead of migrating to Mexico, which has led Mississippi State University's Coastal One Health team to study the insects' habitat and health. The team collects data by tagging the butterflies and plans to return weekly through November—efforts aimed at understanding the species' unusual behavior.  WDAM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Hattiesburg Clinic Oncologist Dr. Bo Hrom said that lobular breast cancer is rare and harder to detect because it spreads in sheets without forming a lump—women are advised to check for changes in breast texture or nipple issues and to use 3-D mammography for early detection.  WDAM

  • The Lady Eagles won a 92 to 80 game against William Carey in the Education Day Game Friday morning at Reed Green Coliseum—five players scored at least 10 points with Meloney Thames leading with 18 and Carly Keats adding 13.   • The MHSAA football playoffs ended for Class 1A-4A on Nov. 6-7 — the Class 5A-7A teams will begin their games on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. New reclassification rules change team alignments from last year.  Hattiesburg American
