  • New data from BabyCenter shows that Olivia and Noah remain the most popular U.S. baby names—while Mississippi parents still favor Ava for girls, with Olivia, Amelia, Harper and Mary also popular and William, John, James, Noah and Liam leading for boys. Two new names, Eliana and Aurora for girls and Luca for boys, joined the national top rankings as trends continue to shift.  Hattiesburg American

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Visit Hattiesburg’s 2024 report shows tourism spending climbed 3.7% to $604 million, adding over 7,000 jobs while the total economic impact rose by over $914 million. Recreation spending grew by 7.3% — the fastest growing tourism sector over the past five years.  WDAM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bellevue Elementary will host its Color Fun Run to raise money for a good cause—inviting students, families, and community members to join and support the event.  WDAM
  • Millsaps College has launched the Millsaps Advantage Scholarship that will cover full tuition for four years for Pell-eligible Mississippi students with a 3.5 GPA and a 25 ACT score—eligible first-year students living on campus will be automatically considered starting in fall.  Hattiesburg American

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mississippi lawmakers examined a plan to give new mums no-questions cash assistance at the Capitol Thursday — the Rx Kids program, which offers $1,500 during pregnancy and $500 a month after birth, was discussed as a way to cut infant deaths. Doctors and public health leaders praised the program's results in Michigan and supported testing it in two counties if state funds are secured by early 2026.  Mississippi Today
