COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City leaders and Edwards Street Fellowship Center are partnering for Hattiesburg’s Make a Difference Day food drive to help families facing potential SNAP benefit delays. The drive will be held on Saturday, November 8th, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hattiesburg Walmart locations on Highway 49 and Highway 98 — food will be distributed from the fellowship center.  WDAM
  • USM held its annual Homecoming parade on Oct. 25 along Hardy Street, campus, and Eagle Walk, drawing campus groups and alumni together. The Student Government Association organized the festivities — including a themed float display inspired by The Wizard of Oz — and attendees gathered after the parade to tailgate and celebrate homecoming.  SM2 Media

CULTURE NEWS

  • The University of Southern Mississippi’s Art and Design program is hosting Raisonné, a printmaking exhibit that honors Professor Emeritus William Baggett’s 39-year career and showcases works by him and other local artists at the George Hurst Building. Today, USM alumnus Andrew Blanchard will lead a printmaking demonstration from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.—a reception will follow from 5:30 to 7 p.m., and the exhibit will run through Nov. 14.  SM2 Media

  • University of Southern Mississippi students join a free swing dance class every Thursday at the Payne Center from 6:30 to 7:20 p.m. to learn dance moves and build confidence while easing stress—helping them feel better on and off the dance floor.  SM2 Media

  • Hattiesburg is set to remain dry and chilly tonight with a high of 63°F and a low of 40°F—while nearby areas like Jackson and Oxford may see rain that could affect trick-or-treating; parents are advised to plan for extra layers and reflective gear to keep children safe after dark.  Hattiesburg American
  • After a truck crash near Heidelberg on Tuesday, three rhesus monkeys that escaped during transport remain at large—local wildlife experts at the Hattiesburg Zoo say Mississippi’s fall climate and abundant food sources may help the monkeys survive despite the risk from predators, and they advise residents not to approach the animals.  Hattiesburg American
