COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hundreds gathered in Town Square Park for the 12th annual Pink Monday Celebration — a local event that honored breast cancer survivors while raising awareness through live music, food and health resources. BUSINESS NEWS

  • Winn-Dixie Company announced that it will sell or close 32 Winn-Dixie stores and eight Harveys locations across Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi, including its last Hattiesburg store at 4400 Hardy St. The transition will be completed by early 2026 as the company focuses on Florida and Georgia—workers at sold locations will have the chance to transfer.  Hattiesburg American

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The USM Writing Center at Cook Library near Starbucks offers free help with writing assignments—assisting students with essays, résumés and articles. Data shows only about one in 14 students use the center, with freshmen and seniors most likely to benefit.  SM2 Media
  • The Southern Miss Eagle’s Nest Food Pantry in the R.C. Cook University Union helps students by serving about 75 individuals every Friday from 9 to 4—while relying on donations from students, staff, businesses, and churches, and offering extended hours and special food drives during the holiday season. Founded in 2016 by the Department of Social Work, the pantry remains a vital service to prevent food insecurity on campus.  SM2 Media
  • American scholar Imani Perry delivered the Clyde Kennard Lecture at USM last Tuesday in the Thad Cochran Grand Ballroom—she shared insights on race, education and personal purpose while signing her latest book after the event.   • USM iTech shared cybersecurity tips for students during National Cybersecurity Month (declared in 2004) and warned that emails requesting urgent responses or containing mismatched details may be scams. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Due to federal funding cuts, the Hattiesburg Public Library will stop free printing for adults on November 3—children will still receive free homework printing. The library has also reduced Hoopla book checkouts from eight to four and now faces uncertainty over future funding for services and benefits.  SM2 Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • Havard Pest Control, based in Hattiesburg, warns residents to guard their homes from kissing bugs as temperatures cool and advises sealing cracks—turning off outdoor lights, storing firewood away, and bringing pets indoors at night to lower the risk of Chagas disease.  SuperTalk Mississippi Media
  • Data from the American Cancer Society in 2024 shows that women had a 13.8% chance of developing and a 2.3% chance of dying from breast cancer (figures that stress its serious risk) even though rates have dropped since 1985. Brittany Dozier from Hattiesburg Clinic’s Breast Center said early detection using self-checks and yearly mammograms (which can spot lumps, skin dimpling, or nipple changes) is key to stopping the disease from advancing.  SM2 Media
