CULTURE NEWS

  • The Hattiesburg Pocket Museum opened an exhibit titled 'A Pocket Full of Posey: Plague Doctors and Peculiar Cures' in an alleyway to show old plague cures—bloodletting, vinegar baths, leech therapy, toad amulets and powdered emeralds—donated by local collector Marty Overstreet. The October display helps visitors learn how people tried to treat the plague in Europe over 400 years ago.  SM2 Media
  • Kayleigh Clark, a native of Sumrall, impressed judges on 'The Voice' with a duet of 'Cowboys cry, too' alongside Camille Tredoux on Tuesday night—Niall Horan selected her to advance to the next round.  Hattiesburg American
  • Last Thursday night, the USM Live Music Club held a show behind the Baptist Student Union where students performed punk rock, blues and jazz to share their passion for music. EDUCATION NEWS

  • PRCC is hosting hundreds of high school students on the Forrest County campus this week—students will learn about college programs and meet with staff as the event unfolds.  WDAM
  • USM’s RISE to the Top program gives students with intellectual or developmental disabilities a full college experience through academic courses, independent living training, and career preparation — as shown when Veronica Myers became the first RISE student to join a sorority.   • Some Southern Miss students are questioning the TurnItIn system because it flags common words and scientific terms as plagiarism, and USM Academic Integrity head Dr. Buford said instructors use additional methods—his office will listen if a student feels wrongly accused and is worried about how their data is used.  SM2 Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mississippi Department of Health declared infant mortality a public health emergency after recording the highest rate in over a decade with 3,527 infant deaths and 9.7 deaths per 1,000 births. The declaration aims to mobilize resources and partner with local groups to improve prenatal care and address factors like preterm birth and low birth weight—key to reducing these disparities.  SM2 Media
