  • The Macedonia Volunteer Fire Department will host its first-ever car show and chili cook-off fundraiser on November 15 at Macedonia Baptist Church from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.—all proceeds will go toward upgrading equipment and supporting operations.  WDAM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mississippi native Kayleigh Clark, a contestant on The Voice, hinted on social media that tonight’s battle round will be a must-watch for fans. The 20-year-old—who previously competed on American Idol and earned a four-chair turn during her blind audition on Niall Horan’s team—left fans wondering if she will perform live.  Hattiesburg American

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The People's Union USA is leading a national boycott of major brands including Amazon, Target, Walmart, Disney and Ben & Jerry’s to push for fair labor standards and reduced corporate practices that hurt communities. Local protests in Hattiesburg and other cities will take place on Oct. 18 — a day set for an economic blackout to support these changes.  Hattiesburg American

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mississippi High School Activities Association Executive Director Rickey Neaves recommended banning tailgating on school property after violent incidents following recent homecoming games that left six people dead and over a dozen injured. He urged schools to require supervision at tailgates and tighten security measures—banning drugs, tobacco and firearms to help keep events safe.  WLBT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hattiesburg-Laurel Regional Airport held an FAA-required live disaster drill Tuesday afternoon+local fire crews and Red Cross volunteers simulated a plane crash using an orange cone to represent the aircraft. The drill marked the 17th such event since the airport opened over 50 years ago and tested the readiness of first responders, law enforcement, and airport staff.  WDAM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Forrest Health will host the Fuel to Fight Cancer event with a 2-mile walk and 5K run at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18—race packets are available on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. or Saturday from 6 to 7 a.m., and all proceeds will support travel funds for patients at the Forrest General Cancer Center.  WDAM
  • Hattiesburg City Council approved a free Narcan vending machine for Station 6 of a fire station to provide 180 doses of the life-saving medication to reverse opioid overdoses. The project is a partnership with the Mississippi Public Health Institute and the Department of Mental Health and is expected to be operational within the next two months + it aims to increase access and reduce opioid overdose stigma.  WDAM

SPORTS NEWS

  • Mississippi duck hunting season will open in November with set bag limits for ducks, mergansers & coots and legal shooting hours from half an hour before sunrise to sunset. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife report showed overall duck numbers remained stable although some species declined, and hunters will face mixed weather this fall and winter.  Hattiesburg American
  • West Jones High School senior running back Caleb Holmes rushed for 230 yards and scored four touchdowns in a 55-21 win against George County High last Friday and earned Player of the Week honors on WDAM 7. He averages 150+ yards per game in 2025 and his strong performance has unlocked more offensive options ahead of his team's home game against Terry High at 7 p.m.  WDAM
