Good morning, Hattiesburg. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 14th of October.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Southern Miss will host its annual Homecoming week from October 20 to 25 with planned events including the Alumni Hall of Fame induction, a parade, the Eagle Walk, and a football game against ULM. The game will feature the presentation of the Homecoming Court at halftime — a key highlight of the week.  WJTV
  • Nancy Loome, executive director of The Parents’ Campaign, said Mississippi parents oppose shifting public funds to private schools because it does not benefit students or taxpayers. She urged state leaders to focus on protecting public education gains as opposition to school choice grows—highlighting concerns from parents on both sides.  Mississippi Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Jones County Board of Supervisors met Monday and tabled plans to set new standards for community center upkeep, including deposit rules and key handling, at all 38 facilities. The board will hold further discussions to create uniform rules that aim to lower taxpayer costs — a measure to improve access for all residents.  WDAM
  • The Hattiesburg Police Department is now accepting applications for its next training academy class — a 17-week program offering a starting salary of $55,000 with benefits like health insurance and paid leave. Lt. Chadra Daniels, who served for 25 years, and her son, a recent academy graduate, continue a strong family legacy in law enforcement as applications remain open until Nov. 13 and the academy will reopen on Feb. 23.  WDAM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mississippi residents are advised to check dark, cluttered areas around homes for black and brown widow spiders, which have venom that can cause serious illness especially in children and older adults — experts recommend removing spider habitats and wearing gloves during yard work. Officials urge caution, noting that while bites often resolve in a few days, medical care should be sought if symptoms like muscle pain or trouble breathing occur.  Hattiesburg American
  • Mississippi Medicaid began covering GLP-1 weight loss drugs in 2023 but only a small number of eligible patients have used them due to drug shortages and strict approval rules—doctors at the Hattiesburg Clinic warn that upcoming funding cuts may further limit access. Patients like April Hines have seen significant health improvements, yet many experts say better awareness and fewer restrictions are needed for these drugs to reach more people.  Hattiesburg American

SPORTS NEWS

  • Coach Jeff Lebby said on October 13 that running back Fluff Bothwell is doubtful for the Florida game on October 18 because of a left leg injury and noted that right tackle Albert Reese IV and safety Isaac Smith were not yet at full strength in practice. Mississippi State will rely on running back Davon Booth if Bothwell misses the game — the update comes after Bothwell was carted off in the loss to Texas A&M on October 4.  Hattiesburg American
