COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Shady Grove Fire & Rescue needs at least a dozen new volunteers to boost response times since only about five of the current 21 routinely answer calls—volunteers must be 18 while those 16 and 17 can join the Junior Firefighter Program. Interested persons can join an application meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at Station 2 at 215 County Barn Road.  WDAM
  • A Hattiesburg bicycle shop will host Save a Life Day + an event offering essential life-saving services for the community.  WDAM
  • Officials at The Great Forrest County Fair have readied sterner security measures to protect visitors and maintain order. The enhanced plan—designed after careful review—will be in effect for the entire fair.  WDAM
  • Visitors to the Great Forrest County Fair will walk through a new portable AI weapons detection system that quickly screens for possible weapons—part of a $100,000 safety upgrade funded by the county’s Emergency Management District in partnership with Hattiesburg and USM. The system was first tested at a New Year’s Eve event and will be used to secure the fair running through Saturday.  WDAM

  • The Trent Lott National Center for Excellence in Economic Development and Entrepreneurship is hosting a weeklong course at USM for nearly 70 students and business leaders from Louisiana, Oklahoma — and Florida. The program gives entry-level professionals and local officials a baseline to strengthen their regional economy.  WDAM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Mississippi State Auditor report found that three nonprofits misused government grants by spending on high salaries, gift cards and gym memberships—details that will be reviewed by the Attorney General's Office—and raised concerns over proper oversight of taxpayer funds. The report, released Sept. 22, named My Brother’s Keeper, 100 Black Men of Jackson and the Juanita Sims Doty Foundation.  Hattiesburg American

  • Tickets to Mississippi State football's SEC opener against Tennessee are on sale for as low as $92 in the upper deck and $127 in the lower level, with parking passes available starting at $51.
