COMMUNITY NEWS

  • This weekend in the Pine Belt, residents can enjoy the Great Forrest County Fair at the Center at Forrest County running today through September 27 and free live music at Town Square Park at 5:00 p.m.—other events include a Saturday wine event in Downtown Laurel, free books at 329 Hardy St, and HubCon with family-friendly gaming from Friday to Sunday.  WDAM
  • Today, The Great Forrest County Fair begins at The Center at Forrest County—now featuring a new carnival company from North American Midway Entertainment—and offers bigger rides, more food and added safety measures like a weapons detector and sheriff oversight. It runs through Sept. 27 with 17 rides, over 10 food vendors, $5 tickets at the gate and free parking.  WDAM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hattiesburg’s top concert hall will host a holiday sing-along this season featuring catchy tunes from Frozen—songs from two other popular films will also be performed to bring festive music to local audiences.  SuperTalk Mississippi Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pearl River Community College reported record enrollment of 6,307 students for the fall semester and a 29% growth in student numbers since 2017 with a 34% increase in credit hours noted in the state report. The college has its main campus in Poplarville and branches in Forrest and Hancock counties.  WDAM
  • Hattiesburg city leaders and school officials declared September as Attendance Awareness Month to remind families that daily attendance is key to student safety, academic progress and supporting our local economy. Officials said that being in class—each day a step toward future achievements—helps maintain the district’s A-rated performance.  WDAM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks is asking hunters to drop off deer heads at 59 sites for CWD testing to track the disease that has caused 446 cases since 2018 — hunters must leave at least 6 inches of neck attached and keep the head cold for accurate testing.  Hattiesburg American

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mississippi Public Health Institute offered free Narcan kits to local residents at a Recovery Awareness event at The Train Depot earlier this evening — featuring food trucks, live music, and support from local recovery centers — while officials said the kits could save lives by reversing overdoses.  WDAM
  • State and local officials have spent less than $1 million of over $124 million in opioid settlement funds—far below the spending in other states—while overdose deaths keep rising. Legislators will approve new spending recommendations in July to direct the remaining money toward fighting addiction.  Mississippi Today

  • Hattiesburg Restaurant Week returns for its eighth year—running October 5–11 with the Sugar Rush theme as over 40 local restaurants offer special discounts on sweet and savory dishes. The event supports the local food scene and invites residents to try new treats.  WJTV
