COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Patriot Tour stopped at Camp Shelby Tuesday to raise funds for disabled veterans by briefly raising and lowering an American flag at the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum—this ride began on May 18 in Scott, Louisiana and will rest today before returning to Cajun Harley-Davidson on the 20th.  WDAM
  • Seminary Baptist Church and Woolwine Ford in Collins are collecting non-perishable foods for their House of Hope ministry—Ford Motor Company’s drive will reach a goal of one million pounds by Sept. 25.  WDAM

CULTURE NEWS

  • 99-year-old Maggie Perteet recalled her lively days as a USO girl in a small Type D building that once gave shelter and happiness to black soldiers training at Camp Shelby during World War II — that building now serves as the African American Military History Museum where her memories live on.  WDAM
  • Communities in the Pine Belt are hosting Constitution Week events in partnership with the Daughters of the American Revolution—mayors in Hattiesburg, Petal, Richton, and Sumrall will issue proclamations while DAR chapters deliver educational materials to schools and libraries. The week-long celebration begins today and runs through September 23, giving locals a chance to learn about the U.S. Constitution and its rights.  WDAM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tuesday, the EPA introduced TANA— a new tool letting Hattiesburg residents share their input on how they want updates about the Hercules Superfund site cleanup, which has been on the hazardous list for nearly three years. The process will shape future communication as the cleanup continues.  WDAM
  • The Hattiesburg City Council voted to rename a part of Pearl Street as Dr. Eddie Holloway Drive to honor his long service to both the university and the community. The new name will cover the area from 40th Avenue to Golden Eagle Avenue on the Southern Miss campus and will take effect in 30 days—a dedication will follow soon.  WDAM

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi is hosting Mississippi’s Walks for Diabetes with events scheduled in several cities—Hattiesburg’s walk at Longleaf Trace will have registration at 1:00 p.m. and the walk beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 19. Proceeds will support the foundation’s programs for diabetes care.  WJTV

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Mississippi's hunting seasons start in October with deer archery opening on Oct. 1 in the Delta, Hills and North Central units and on Oct. 15 in the Southeast—hunters can also pursue squirrels, rabbits, bobcats, opossums, raccoons, doves and light geese under varying bag limits and rules.  Hattiesburg American
