COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local officials will hold community workshops about the future of the old Hercules, Inc. plant site — residents can learn details and share ideas.  WDAM
  • United Way of Southeast Mississippi will hold its Can—paign Food Drive on Thursday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is asking donors to drop off food at Corner Market grocery stores in Petal, Midtown Hattiesburg, and on U.S. 11 in Oak Grove to support local pantries serving residents in four counties.  WDAM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mississippi officials are considering limits on SNAP benefits so that families must pay out of pocket for soda and candy if changes take effect in 2026 — a move similar to waivers already approved in other states. Gov. Tate Reeves said he has not reviewed a formal proposal, and nutrition experts warn that such changes may require families to adjust their grocery lists.  WDAM
  • Mississippi lawmakers are debating a change that would automatically restore voting rights for felons after they complete probation or parole—attorney Marvin Sanders said the new approach would simplify a process that currently requires multiple legal steps. State Rep. Noah Sandford noted that if a bill is drafted, it must pass both the House and Senate before reaching Gov. Tate Reeves.  WJTV
  • Hattiesburg police officers have received raises as announced today — the department is now accepting applications for its next recruitment drive to fill upcoming vacancies.  WDAM
  • Mississippi towns and counties have spent millions from opioid settlements on regular government costs instead of programs to stop addiction—Attorney General Lynn Fitch allowed the funds to be used for any purpose, and Hattiesburg is the only city asking locals for input.
