COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hattiesburg has installed its first safe haven baby box at Fire Station No.1 to give parents in crisis a secure and anonymous way to surrender infants up to 45 days old — a device funded by private donors with over $15,000. It is the ninth baby box in Mississippi and sends a silent alarm to alert fire station staff when used.  WDAM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Zoo Boo will transform the Hattiesburg Zoo this October with over one hundred LED lantern displays featuring witches, ghouls and glowing creatures for a spooky celebration — the event will run from Oct. 10-11, 17-18 and 24-30 from 6 to 9 p.m. and offers animal encounters, rides and themed activities.  Hattiesburg American
  • This fall, the de Grummond Collection at the University of Mississippi will host a reunion for the Rey family as they visit Hattiesburg to celebrate the creators of Curious George—featuring exhibitions, a film screening, and a musical performance. The series of events will be held at local venues including Prospect Gallery and the Southern Miss Campus.  WJTV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Senator Joey Fillingane is drafting legislation to adjust first responders' retirement benefits after House Bill 1 increased service requirements—he said a review report from the Stennis Institute of Government is due next week and will help shape recommendations for the legislative session starting Jan. 6.  WDAM
  • The Oak Grove High School Beta Club and MS Votes will host a free voter registration drive at the Oak Grove Public Library on Sept. 15 from 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Attendees can register, check their status and view voting machine demonstrations (Beta Club volunteers will also lead a storytime for children).  WDAM

  • Dr. John Gaudet, a retired pediatrician in Hattiesburg, urges lawmakers to reverse planned Medicaid cuts that will reduce access to care for children, seniors and rural clinics.   • WDAM 7 will deliver a broad weekend sports lineup on NBC, ABC and Gulf Coast Sports+Entertainment Network with college football, NFL football and horse racing among featured events.
