CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Hattiesburg Police arrested 20-year-old William Decorius Beverly after a traffic stop on Sept. 6 at 10 p.m. on U.S. Highway 49—he is charged with possessing a device designed to illegally modify a firearm into a machine gun. Hattiesburg American
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ PRCC opened its Asbury Allied Health and Nursing Building on the Forrest County campus on Tuesday with a ribbon cutting that gathered students and supporters—state funding built the $4 million facility and it will let the college add about 200 nursing students per semester. WDAM
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Laurel police chief Earl Reed said crime has dropped over the last two months since he took charge—new staff and a minor curfew passed by Mayor Magee have kept juveniles off the streets. He added that officers will attend a certification class on new motorcycles next week to further strengthen his team. WDAM
- ➤ The Mississippi Department of Transportation will build a new bridge in 2026 over the Tallahatchie River and will give away a historic 76-year-old steel bridge on Highway 32 in Tallahatchie County free of charge for relocation and preservation. Formal proposals (sent to Brian Childs at P.O. Box 660, Batesville) must be submitted by October 1 (with reimbursement for removal costs) to qualify for the offer. WJTV
