GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mississippi is holding its Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday from Aug 29 to Aug 31, offering a no-sales-tax break on guns and archery gear before hunting season. The tax break covers pistols, rifles, shotguns, ammo, cases, and accessories + it excludes trucks, ATVs, knives, and most hunting clothing.  Hattiesburg American

SPORTS NEWS

  • Mississippi State and Southern Miss will open their football seasons today at The Rock in Hattiesburg—both teams had weak records last season with State winning two games and Southern Miss one. Oddsmakers favor State by 13.5 points—transfers have reshaped the teams as players move between rivals.  Mississippi Today
  • Football season is back today as Southern Miss hosts Mississippi State at The Rock with kickoff at 11:00 a.m., and extra visitors are expected to cause traffic delays—especially on Hardy Street, U.S. 49 and Interstate 59 between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. City officials will use road closures to clear on-campus traffic and reopen them as soon as traffic has dispersed.  WJTV
