EDUCATION NEWS

  • William Carey University added eight new townhouses on Vernon Street to house 24 College of Osteopathic Medicine students and boost campus living. These new homes build on last January’s dedication of eight townhouses named in honor of longtime trustee Gary Fordham—further supporting the university’s expansion efforts.  WDAM

FINANCE NEWS

  • Trustmark National Bank changed its name to Trustmark Bank after converting to a Mississippi-chartered banking corporation and receiving regulatory approval from the Federal Reserve & Mississippi Department of Banking and Consumer Finance. Customer accounts remain unchanged while the bank reported better-than-expected second-quarter earnings with earnings per share at $0.92 and revenue at $201.3 million.  Hattiesburg American

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Aug. 14, the Supreme Court declined to block a Mississippi law that requires age verification and parental consent for social media sites—allowing the law to remain active while legal challenges continue. NetChoice, representing major platforms, argued the law violates privacy and free speech.  Hattiesburg American
  • The Lamar County Road Department has launched a program to train employees to earn a commercial driver’s license—workers learn truck inspection, air brake checks, backing up, and on-road driving and will get a $4 raise to $17 an hour if they pass, with a one-year commitment required.  WJTV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Sacred Heart Catholic School's Crusaders face many changes as they move from Class 1A to Class 2A and lost key players from last season—coach Ed Smith said the team must work harder to win. The team looks to beat its first-round playoff exit record when it plays at Centreville Academy on August 29 at 7 p.m.  WDAM
