EDUCATION NEWS

  • MGCCC unveiled DITAC—a new defense industry training initiative that partners with Huntington-Ingalls, Bollinger, Keesler Air Force Base, and the Naval Construction Battalion Center to offer a two-year pathway for high-demand, high-paying careers. MGCCC President Dr. Mary Graham said the program will use tuition waivers to help keep costs low for students while they train for jobs in the booming defense field.  WDAM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Hattiesburg Fire Department told city council its FY2026 plan and asked for funding to train EMTs, hire more firefighters, raise starting pay from $40,000 to $42,000, buy new equipment, and rebuild Station No.2—firefighters have used a temporary space since 2017. Mayor Toby Barker said public safety remains the top priority as budget talks continue, with the operating budget set for mid-September review.  WDAM

SPORTS NEWS

  • Ole Miss and Mississippi State men's basketball teams have released their SEC schedules for the upcoming season. Ole Miss will start on Jan. 3 at Oklahoma and play key games against Arkansas, Missouri and its rival Mississippi State on Jan. 17 — Mississippi State will open at Texas on Jan. 3 and face teams including Alabama and LSU before ending with contests against Florida and Georgia.  SuperTalk Mississippi Media
