- ➤ Hattiesburg police arrested 19-year-old Asia Barlow on July 5 for leaving the scene of a hit-and-run in the 5000 block of Hardy Street—officers arrived at 11:15 p.m. and found two males and one female with gunshot wounds as well as another female injured by a vehicle. WJTV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Certified K-12 teachers in eight counties with Hancock Whitney locations can apply online for the Leo Seal Teacher Grant, which offers one-time awards of up to $20,000 for creative teaching proposals. The grant is funded by Hancock Whitney and administered by the Gulf Coast Community Foundation—who will recognize recipients at an awards luncheon in early 2026—and applications are due by September 30. - ➤ Three meteor showers are lighting up the Mississippi night sky from mid-July to late August. The Perseid runs from July 17th to August 23rd while the alpha Capricornids and Delta Aquariids are active until August 12th—best viewing is expected near the new moon on July 24th at dark-sky spots like national forests and state parks. - ➤ The City of Hattiesburg on July 17 renamed its intermodal facility in honor of former Mayor J. Ed Morgan with a dedication ceremony held at the depot. Community leaders — city officials and members of Morgan’s family — gathered to mark his contributions during his 12-year tenure. WJTV

- ➤ Hattiesburg’s Miskelly’s hosted the WDAM-7 and Vitalant Blood Bowl donation drive on Thursday from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.—Vitalant aimed for at least 20 donors and had seven by 3 p.m. The drive will continue Friday at Petal’s Chick-Fil-A from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.—and at Collins’ Woolwine Ford from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. WDAM
