Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 9th of July.
Good morning, Hattiesburg.
🏘️ Community
Hattiesburg Police Department will partner with certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians to host a free car seat giveaway and installation event on July 16 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Robertson Place Park on Katie Avenue—families must have a child present to receive one seat per vehicle.
📰 Economy
Shoppers in Mississippi can take advantage of a tax-free weekend from Friday, July 11 to Sunday, July 13 when select items like clothing, footwear, and school supplies under $100 are exempt from sales tax—rules require that items sold as sets stay together and discounts that lower the price below $100 count. Retailers including online vendors must follow these guidelines—shipping, handling, and layaway charges are not part of the $100 price and therefore do not qualify.
🏛️ Government
Today, the Hattiesburg City Council held its first meeting with a new configuration—council members set plans for upcoming policy reviews.
City leaders in Hattiesburg are updating their comprehensive plan, Hattiesburg 150 & Beyond, to guide the city's growth for the next 20 years and will host 11 public input sessions starting July 17.
Residents can attend sessions at schools, community centers and other venues to share ideas that will influence zoning changes, capital improvements and park development.
