COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Red Cross is asking for at least 100 volunteers during hurricane season to help set up, run and close shelters while delivering food, clothing and aid to people in need later this year. Volunteers work shifts that last two to four hours or sign up for longer service, and all receive training for their roles.  WDAM

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Entergy Mississippi announced a contribution of over $600k to help customers cover high energy bills amid hot summer temperatures in Hattiesburg. The program will start soon — providing bill assistance to qualifying customers as costs rise.  SuperTalk Mississippi Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Hattiesburg Zoo introduced a Junior Volunteer Program for teens ages 13 to 15 with 15 openings and an orientation session scheduled for July 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Applicants must apply online by July 14 and commit to one full day of volunteer work each month at the zoo.  WJTV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Mississippi Secretary of State’s Office announced that voter registration for the 2025 Special Primary Election closes on July 7 for mail-in applications—and voters who register in-person at the Circuit Clerk’s Office can participate in legislative special elections on August 5. The election covers special races in several House and Senate districts.  WJTV
  • Converge, the nonprofit that runs federal family planning funds for 91 clinics, had its funding restored after a three-month hold that forced the group to lay off half its staff—officials confirmed the agency found the nonprofit in compliance following its investigation. The group plans to rehire some of the 10 employees while working to resume essential services for the community.  WDAM
  • The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks upgraded 67 RV campsites at Paul B. Johnson State Park in Hattiesburg—completing renovations with full hookups, new grills, and picnic tables. Reservations are now open for visitors who can also enjoy a splash pad, nature trails, and Geiger Lake for fishing and boating.  WJTV
