- ➤ A funeral service was held Saturday at Temple Baptist Church for legendary USM women’s basketball coach Joye Lee-McNelis—who died Tuesday after an eight-year battle with cancer—and was attended by family, friends and former players. She was buried at Lee’s Chapel #2 Cemetery in Picayune. WDAM
- ➤ The annual Shelby camp drew 116 kids who experienced activities that showed how their parents serve in the military - organizers said the event gives youth a hands-on look at military life. WDAM
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ James Walker, 41 from Hattiesburg, who faces charges of murder, aggravated residential burglary and possession of a weapon by a felon after the fatal shooting of 59-year-old Thomas Roseberry on Walker Road in south Forrest County, is no longer on the Forrest County Jail roster as of Saturday afternoon—his preliminary hearing is set for July 25. - ➤ A Forbes report found that Mississippi was ranked as the ninth-worst state for drivers in 2024 and remains the 17th worst for drunk driving—intoxicated drivers are said to exact a heavy toll on the state’s roadways. The report also noted that Mississippi had the 30th highest rate for DUI arrests while fatal accidents involving drunk drivers ranked sixth nationally, with recent travel periods showing a drop in DUI arrests. - ➤ Dorie Ladner—born in Hattiesburg on June 28th, 1942—became a civil rights leader who worked with figures like Medgar Evers and joined key protests like the Tougaloo Nine demonstration and the March on Washington. She and her sister Joyce marched in many protests and later were honored with awards and a Freedom Trail marker in Hattiesburg. Mississippi Today
