  • The Thornhills, retired commanders who returned to serve Hattiesburg for nine months — building strong ties with the local community — will soon move back to Meridian as Captains Nathaniel and Raquel Revaula arrive from Frankfort to take over their roles.  WDAM

CRIME NEWS

  • A federal judge ruled that death row inmate Richard Jordan will be executed tomorrow at Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman despite his attorneys' clemency appeal citing his PTSD from Vietnam service—state officials must pause the execution if he shows signs of consciousness.  Mississippi Today
  • Another man from Laurel, Malik Pugh (28), was arrested on June 19 and charged with murder in connection with Kenneth Dean’s death on June 15; he was denied bond during his initial court appearance, following the June 18 arrests of Devonte Boyd and Tyrone Cook.  WDAM

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Mississippi will hold a tax-free weekend from July 11 through July 13 for back-to-school shopping that lets families avoid paying sales tax on clothing, shoes and school supplies priced under $100. The state includes eligible items for both adults and children—items costing over $100 will have a 7% tax applied.  Hattiesburg American

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Commons project is converting an empty lot near downtown into a community space with a food truck park, kid amenities, and a small stage—funded by $2.9 million in state and federal grants. City officials say this phase will finish by late fall as part of the larger Gordon’s Creek Linear Park vision.  WDAM
