  • FestivalSouth returns to Hattiesburg for its 17th season with national recognition (Forbes named it one of the most underrated festivals) and starts a monthlong arts celebration as Disney’s Newsies opens at USM’s Mannoni Performing Arts Center June 4 to 6 with over 50 events scheduled through June 27.  WDAM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mississippi residents will have until June 8 to file individual and business taxes thanks to a tax filing extension announced by the state Department of Revenue and IRS. The relief follows winter storm damage that knocked out power for thousands — residents can file electronically or by paper.  Hattiesburg American

HEALTH NEWS

  • A local first responder shared safe steps for exiting vehicles caught in flash flood waters — unbuckling quickly and moving to higher ground — as Tuesday's thunderstorms may increase the risk. Residents are encouraged to review these tips to stay safe.  WDAM

SPORTS NEWS

  • Pearl River Community College's Wildcat baseball team celebrated a national championship win on Sunday night at the Poplarville campus; the Wildcats won 4+3 in extra innings over South Mountain, making them the first NJCAA Division II school to claim both baseball and softball titles in one season.  WDAM
  • Magnolia Heights senior Cole Prosek was named Gatorade Mississippi baseball player of the year on June 1. The Ole Miss signee led his team to a MAIS 4A championship — finishing with a .585 average and 18 home runs.  Hattiesburg American
