CULTURE NEWS

  • Archaeologists at UMMC's Asylum Hill uncovered a rare 200-pound cast iron casket that may help identify a middle-aged woman from between 1860 and 1880. The discovery on March 18 comes after 3.5 years of digging and may shed light on local burial practices.  WDAM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nearly 400 high school students are taking part in the annual JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge at Camp Shelby from Monday to Thursday. The event features team-building exercises, land navigation and canoeing — it is led by Lt. Col. Glen Sutton and staff.  WDAM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The DMV On Wheels will return at the Prentiss Public Library on Tuesday, June 2 to offer driver’s license and ID services for residents who used to travel to Hattiesburg or Brookhaven (including elderly and teens). The mobile unit will be on site monthly from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  WDAM

  • Blackstone Products has recalled its Parmesan Ranch Seasoning sold at Walmart and online for a salmonella risk. Mississippi shoppers are advised to check for products with best-by dates of 07/02/2027, 08/05/2027 or 08/12/2027 and lot numbers 2025-43282, 2025-46172 or 2026-54751 and discard them immediately.  Hattiesburg American
  • Crews repaired leaks on U.S. 11 in Eastabuchie on Wednesday, which temporarily lowered water pressure — prompting the utility to issue a boil water notice for addresses south of 1871 U.S. Hwy 11, Grayson Park, Ray Dearman Road, Pond Drive and Chappell Hill Road until further notice.  WDAM

SPORTS NEWS

  • Pearl River Community College softball celebrated its first NJCAA Div. II national championship in a homecoming rally. Fans, families & players gathered in Poplarville to mark a season that ended with a 48-7 record.  WDAM
  • Jim Stewart Allen, known as Broccoli Guy, traveled from Washington to support Mississippi State softball and become their unofficial mascot using a broccoli rally prop.
