COMMUNITY NEWS

  • About 50 scouts from five local troops honored veterans by placing American flags on graves at Highland Cemetery (and nearby Roseland Park Cemetery) Saturday morning, in an initiative organized by VFW Post 3036 to teach Memorial Day values.  WDAM
  • The annual Memorial Day ceremony moved from Veterans Memorial Park to the Jackie Dole Sherrill Community Center on May 25 due to weather concerns. The event will begin at 10 a.m. and include a flag presentation for a veteran’s son and the reading of 173 servicemen’s names.  WDAM
  • Families enjoyed Memorial Day at Paul B. Johnson Park on Saturday—kids rode bikes, played in mudholes, and families grilled hamburgers while remembering veterans. The event brought the community together in a warm, festive celebration.  WDAM

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Mississippi Armed Forces Museum will close on June 3 for a $1.62 million HVAC upgrade (expected to take about two months) that will improve the climate for artifacts and visitors.  WLBT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local 8-year-old Zack Embry from McComb has been seizure-free for a year after undergoing life-changing brain surgery at Texas Children’s Hospital — his family calls the recovery a miracle. Zack now looks forward to playing outside with his sister while urging parents to seek further opinions when needed.  WLBT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Friday night—Drey Barrett’s walk-off grand slam lifted Southern Miss to a 7-6 win over Troy at DABOS Park in Montgomery, boosting the Golden Eagles to an 11-game win streak.  WLBT
  • Southern Miss baseball lost to Troy 9-6 on May 23 in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. The Golden Eagles must win back-to-back games today to claim the title, as their offense struggled to bring late magic + their comeback hopes rest on a decisive performance.  Hattiesburg American
