About 50 scouts from five local troops honored veterans by placing American flags on graves at Highland Cemetery (and nearby Roseland Park Cemetery) Saturday morning, in an initiative organized by VFW Post 3036 to teach Memorial Day values.

The annual Memorial Day ceremony moved from Veterans Memorial Park to the Jackie Dole Sherrill Community Center on May 25 due to weather concerns.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. and include a flag presentation for a veteran’s son and the reading of 173 servicemen’s names.

Johnson Park on Saturday—kids rode bikes, played in mudholes, and families grilled hamburgers while remembering veterans. The event brought the community together in a warm, festive celebration.

The Mississippi Armed Forces Museum will close on June 3 for a $1.62 million HVAC upgrade (expected to take about two months) that will improve the climate for artifacts and visitors.
