  • Eight families lost everything in a fire at Park Pines Apartments on Thursday, and the Fieldhouse For Homeless set up a donation drive for clothes, shoes, furniture—donations are accepted at Piedmont Park Apartments at 78 Wisteria Drive.  WDAM

CRIME NEWS

  • A Hattiesburg man, Velton Taylor Williams, Jr., pled guilty in federal court to stealing SNAP benefits and TANF funds meant for low-income families by selling them and using them for himself—he is scheduled to be sentenced on August 19.  WJTV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Sixth Street Museum District recognized five local Green-Book sites on Friday—this guide once helped African American travelers find safe lodging during segregation. Today at 10 a.m.—the Historic Eureka School hosts a tour and virtual presentation to share this important local history.  WDAM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fourteen law enforcement officers from Hattiesburg Police, Forrest County Sheriff’s Office, Forrest General Hospital Police and Diamondhead Police completed a 40-hour crisis intervention training at the Hattiesburg Police and Fire Training Academy to learn de-escalation and listening skills for handling mental health crises— the course was led by Pine Belt Mental Healthcare Resources to give officers an extra tool for assisting those in crisis.  WDAM
  • House and Senate agreed on a $7 billion state budget and sent it to Gov. Tate Reeves for approval as lawmakers await his call for a special session before the new fiscal year begins on July 1—Reeves must now call the 174-member session for a vote on funding government services.  Mississippi Today

  • Proposed federal cuts may reduce Medicaid benefits that support nearly 700,000 Mississippians including people with disabilities who need home care services. Without these supports, families risk having to move loved ones into institutions + critics say vulnerable residents will lose a critical lifeline.  Mississippi Today
