  • Richard Gerald Jordan, Mississippi’s oldest death row inmate serving 48 years, is scheduled for execution on June 25—his attorney is asking the state Supreme Court to reconsider the ruling because Jordan still has an open case in the U.S. Supreme Court and another lawsuit challenges his execution method—pending further legal review.  Hattiesburg American

  • The Social Security Administration released its 2024 baby names list — the nation shows Olivia and Liam as the top names while Mississippi parents have kept Ava as the top girl's name for 11 years and made William the top boy name.  Hattiesburg American

  • Mississippi farmers say federal emergency aid payments were too little and came too late to cover planting season costs — some growers reported that delayed assistance forced them to delay seed and fuel purchases while facing high input costs and tariff worries. Experts warn that these factors may push the industry into a tough 2025 and 2026.  Mississippi Today

EDUCATION NEWS

  • About 1,000 students are graduating from William Carey University with ceremonies held at Temple Baptist Church on Thursday and Friday and another for the School of Pharmacy in April. Today, the College of Osteopathic Medicine graduates its largest class ever at 10 a.m.—President Ben Burnett said the class will grow to 200 next year.  WDAM

  • Sunnybrook Dentistry and Braces in Hattiesburg will host Sharing Smiles Day on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Families without dental insurance can bring their children for free cleanings, exams, extractions + other dental services on a first-come, first-served basis.  WDAM
  • Mississippi State Veterinarian Dr. James Watson warned animal owners to check livestock and pets for New World Screwworm, an invasive pest with orange eyes (a metallic blue or green body) that can feed on fresh flesh, as recent detections in Mexico have raised concerns and led the USDA to suspend live cattle, horse, and bison imports from the southern border.  SuperTalk Mississippi Media
  • The Mississippi Board of Animal Health urges animal owners to check for New World Screwworm, an invasive pest that can harm livestock, pets, and even people. The pest was eradicated decades ago but recent detections in Mexico indicate it may soon spread in southern areas.  WLBT
