  • Prentiss police Sgt. Christopher Rogers received a life-saving citation Friday after he stopped a crisis by finding a young man with a gun in a park south of Columbia Avenue. He calmly disarmed the child and got him to safety — an act honored by city officials.  WDAM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two graduates of USM's RISE program walked across the stage yesterday as they joined USM's class of 2026. Robert Carley said his experience with RISE helped him overcome challenges, and Program Executive Coordinator Danielle Mullins announced plans to expand the program for more college opportunities for students with intellectual disabilities.  WLBT
  • More than 2,000 graduates celebrated at Southern Miss spring commencement in Hattiesburg earlier today. The ceremony marked a milestone in students’ academic journeys as families and friends gathered to honor the new graduates.  WDAM

HEALTH NEWS

  • South Central Regional Medical Center recently named its employee of the year to honor outstanding service and dedication. The award was given at the hospital in Hattiesburg.  WDAM

SPORTS NEWS

  • South Panola won the MHSAA 6A softball championship with a walk-off hit by junior Hailey Heafner on May 15 at Southern Miss Softball Complex. The Lady Tigers clinched the title in extra innings (8-7 win) in a game that had a close finish.  Hattiesburg American
  • Southern Miss won its eighth game in a row Friday, May 15 + the win boosts team confidence as they prepare for their next contest.  WDAM
  • Hernando High School's softball team won the MHSAA 7A championship on May 15 with a (9-7) win over Ocean Springs. The Lady Tigers ended past title losses with a five-run sixth inning to claim their second championship.  Hattiesburg American
