  • Officials said a house fire broke out on Tuesday, May 13 at 10:05 a.m. at a residence on US-49 just south of South Gate Road near Camp Shelby, and firefighters responded quickly to control the blaze.  WDAM

CRIME NEWS

  • The Mississippi Supreme Court ruled that Lisa Jo Chamberlin—the only woman on death row—will not get another chance to appeal her capital murder conviction because her claim of new evidence was filed too late, even though one judge said her abuse history should be reviewed further.  Hattiesburg American

  • Hattiesburg’s annual Craft Beer Festival will be held Saturday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Rebekah Stark Johnson Community Arts Center—featuring over 100 craft beverages, live music, food vendors and pop-up shops as part of a downtown association fundraiser.  Hattiesburg American
  • Mississippi native Jamal Roberts advanced to the top three on American Idol Monday night and will now prepare for the finale on May 18—he earned over 19 million votes with performances of 'Ain’t No Mountain High Enough' and 'Beauty and the Beast.'   • A report from the Center for Healthcare Quality and Payment Reform shows that most rural hospitals in Mississippi do not offer maternity care.
