  • Southern Miss defensive back Jeramie Posey received Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year at the Talon Awards today, recognizing his balance of academics & football. He said the honor inspires young athletes to pursue excellence both on and off the field.  SM2 Media
  • Mississippi public school teachers, attendance officers, psychologists, occupational therapists & assistant teachers will get a $2,000 raise starting July 1 amid a shortage. North Forrest High School principal Jennifer Riels said the increase shows appreciation but urged further steps to retain staff.  SM2 Media

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, May 5, Hattiesburg Zoo euthanized Bunga, a Malayan tiger that suffered a rapid health decline from hypertension and disc disease. He was nearly 15 years old and served as an ambassador for endangered species, officials said.  Hattiesburg American

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Amy Blaylock became the first female chief of wildlife at MDWFP on May 6 — her appointment follows a career at the department since 2007 and a strong family legacy in wildlife, as she replaces Russ Walsh.  Hattiesburg American

HEALTH NEWS

  • A report revealed Mississippi nurses earned among the lowest wages and only 8.32 registered nurses served per 1,000 residents — a shortage that could impact patient care. The findings were released yesterday and have raised concerns about work conditions in the state.  Hattiesburg American
  • Mississippi Department of Health will resume its home visitation pilot for high-risk mothers and infants in 10 counties in July. The new model uses community health workers + registered nurses for clinical oversight to help lower infant mortality rates.  Mississippi Today
