CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities arrested Christian Spano on May 6 for trafficking 9,000 units of LSD and 101 grams of cocaine — his arrest is part of an ongoing investigation.  WDAM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teacher Appreciation Week is underway from May 5—9 and includes National Teacher's Day on May 6 with free food and special deals from local restaurants and businesses for educators. The deals come as Mississippi faces teacher shortages and low pay compared to the national average.  Hattiesburg American
  • Two Hattiesburg High seniors received the first ever ‘Pathway to Progress’ scholarships on Tuesday from Marcus ‘DJ Kuhjo’ Carr’s Good Vibe Foundation—each student received $1,000 for their education as Aniyah Jones plans to attend the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Robert Bourne, Jr. will attend Alcorn State University.  WDAM
  • The Innova Prep Adult Spelling Bee will be held on May 8 at the Saenger Theater to raise funds for the Innova Preparatory School that serves special needs students + the event blends comedy with charity.  WDAM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A memorial ceremony will honor Officers Benjamin Deen and Liquori Tate at the Hattiesburg Housing Authority on Friday, May 9 at 1:00 p.m.—the officers died on May 9, 2015 during a traffic stop. Hattiesburg police officials, Mayor Toby Barker, and family members will speak during the event as representatives from the Pine Belt Foundation announce the recipients of the Benjamin J. Deen & Liquori Tate Memorial Scholarship Fund.  WJTV
  • The Hattiesburg Fire Department unveiled its new William Carey University-themed fire truck and asks locals to submit a name that shows its school connection. The truck will go to Station Two once it passes its final inspection.  WDAM
