COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City officials announced road closures for the Parade of Champions on Monday, May 5; closures will start between 5 p.m. and 5:15 p.m.—the parade is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. The event will start at Sacred Heart High School’s parking lot and follow West Pine, Front, and Main Streets to the Community Arts Center—Jerome Brown and Ted Tibbett will provide commentary as the celebration passes downtown.  WDAM

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Forrest County Coroner Lisa Klem said that a fourteen year old Hattiesburg teen found dead in the fountain at Veterans Memorial Park on March 18 was likely electrocuted — the death was ruled an accident by police.  WDAM
  • One person died when two 18-wheelers crashed on Interstate 59 South about 1.5 miles south of Hardy Street on May 2, and first responders cleared the scene as police investigated the cause - further details are pending.  WJTV

CRIME NEWS

  • On May 2, 1964, Klansmen abducted, tortured and drowned 19-year-old Henry Hezekiah Dee and Charles Eddie Moore who were trying to catch a ride home — federal investigators later reopened the case in 2005 and convicted a suspect.  Mississippi Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mississippi residents who need a Real ID to fly or visit secure federal sites must update their driver's licenses by May 7. The DMV is offering special Saturday appointments today from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at offices in Biloxi+Brookhaven+Greenwood+Hattiesburg West and other locations.  Hattiesburg American
