  • At The Arc in Hattiesburg, staff work daily to support 43 individuals with developmental disabilities amid building repairs—flickering lights and broken toilets—and the lack of a dedicated maintenance staff. The nonprofit relies on community support and volunteers to keep its accessible facility running and expand services across seven counties.  WDAM

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Hattiesburg police say that a woman was killed and an adolescent injured after being struck by a vehicle on the 6700 block of U.S. 49 at 6:00 a.m. on April 18—she was holding the adolescent while crossing the road—and the driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.  WJTV

CRIME NEWS

  • Mississippi crime lab processed 27% more rape kits in 2024 after a 2023 law required police to pick up kits within 24 hours and deliver them to the lab within seven days (a system that lets survivors track their kit status), though officials still could not tell how many remain untested.  WJTV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Over 80 men in red shirts joined an annual cross walk led by Crosspoint Community Church and New Seasons Family Worship Center on Friday morning along U.S. 98, walking nearly seven miles to honor Jesus' sacrifice. The 20-year tradition celebrated unity and will continue with an Easter celebration through Sunday.  WDAM

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Peanut farmers in the Pine Belt started planting for the 2025 crop with veteran farmer Joe Morgan planting nearly 1,000 acres. The Mississippi Peanut Growers Association predicts a 30 percent statewide increase in peanut acres and expects record planting if the weather cooperates, with harvest set for September.  WDAM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On April 17, Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning approved new degree programs for Jackson State University, Mississippi State University and Southern Miss during a regular meeting. The new programs include mechanical engineering and public health informatics at Jackson State, organizational leadership and early childhood teaching at Mississippi State, and a major in philosophy, religion and law along with restructured tracks in strategic communication, fine arts and forensic science at Southern Miss—changes confirmed at the meeting.  Hattiesburg American

  • On Friday morning at the Lake Terrace Convention Center, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes recognized student-athletes and coaches from the Pine Belt for their strong character both on and off the field. Perry Central High School's head girls basketball coach Consuela Bourne was named Coach of The Year and said her faith has guided her career as she leads young women in sports.  WDAM
