- ➤ Former members of the Mississippi National Guard’s 184th Transportation Brigade gathered Saturday in Laurel at the Veterans Memorial Museum for their 4th annual reunion. About 40 veterans shared lunch plus recalled serving from the 1970s to the 1990s. WDAM
- ➤ The Mississippi State University Pine Belt Master Gardeners held their Spring Garden Day in Hattiesburg, offering lessons on water gardens and landscaping for both new and seasoned gardeners. They said that local vendors provided key advice, and a second garden day is planned for September. WDAM
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ WDAM 7 staff were honored Saturday night at the Mississippi Association of Broadcasters awards — the station won 20 honors, including six first-place wins — for excellence in news, weather and investigative reporting. WDAM
- ➤ Hattiesburg Pocket Museum transforms a gray alley behind a theater into a vibrant community hub with miniature art installations. Vicki Taylor and her husband Rick have curated changing exhibits since 2020 that attract visitors and boost local tourism. Mississippi Today
- ➤ Hattiesburg teen cellist Ian Gonzalez was chosen for the National Youth Orchestra 2 after years of dedicated practice. He will travel this summer to perform at Carnegie Hall and tour the Dominican Republic — a milestone that inspires other young musicians in our community. WDAM
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Local children learned about everyday jobs at the Touch-a-Truck event at the Forrest County Center on Saturday — firefighters demonstrated the Jaws of Life while other workers showcased their vehicles, giving kids a hands-on learning experience. WDAM
- ➤ On Saturday, Apr. 11 Congressman Michael Guest hosted local high school students in a session (with West Point cadets and graduates) to learn the steps for a military academy nomination. The event stressed that strong grades and ACT scores are key for achieving a nomination. WLBT
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Nearly 1,700 runners and walkers set a record at the 14th Hattiesburg Half Marathon, 10K and 5K held Saturday morning at Saenger Theater—raising funds for seven local non-profits and drawing participants from 32 states. WDAM
