  • Advocacy groups are organizing boycotts to urge major retailers to restore diversity, equity and inclusion programs. In Mississippi, a Walmart blackout runs from April 7 to 14 and a 40-day Target boycott runs until April 17 — with more protest actions planned into late spring and summer — as shoppers respond to changes in DEI policies.  Hattiesburg American

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, while many libraries celebrate National Library Week, the Mississippi Library Association is not hosting events—citing a March 14 executive order that cut funding for early childhood literacy, rural internet access, and job search assistance; in Hattiesburg, some libraries now offer fewer digital book checkouts.  Hattiesburg American

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mississippi Lottery Corporation transferred $10,828,149.36 to the state in March, bringing the fiscal year total to $85,200,993.40—$80 million went to roads and bridges and $5,200,933.40 went to the Education Enhancement Fund for early learning and teacher support. The fund will continue to receive transfers through the June payment.  WJTV
  • City leaders and planners met Monday to discuss rezoning changes for the 'Right Down Broadway' masterplan to revive a once busy corridor in downtown Hattiesburg—an overlay district is proposed to boost housing opportunities and attract investors. The public hearing is set for May 7 at 1:00 p.m. at the Jackie Dole Sherrill Community Center.  WDAM
