- ➤ Chief Petty Officer Joseph Hawthorne of NCBC Gulfport was named USO Sailor of the Year 2026 for his work recovering four soldiers after a March 2025 training accident in a Lithuanian swamp. He plans to retire at the end of April and focus on his Coastal Elite Dumpsters business. WDAM

- ➤ Two Pine Belt Robotics Academy teams will compete in robotics and drone events later this month; Penguin-eers travel to St. Louis from April 21-30 while Brave Eagles contest on April 17-18 (both events offer STEM networking opportunities). WDAM
- ➤ Hattiesburg and Petal YMCA summer camps saw enrollment drop by about 80 children as families face uncertainty over paying for child care, with lawmakers still debating House Bill 1909 (which would add $15 million to help). Future assistance remains dependent on available funds. WDAM
