EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mississippi universities will launch new college completion programs following the end of the Complete 2 Compete initiative in 2025. The Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning Board approved the change in January to help adults earn a bachelor’s degree by designing tailored requirements and recruiting eligible students.  Mississippi Today

FINANCE NEWS

  • Mississippi taxpayers charged IRS late fees during COVID may be owed refunds if they check their tax transcript and file IRS Form 843 before July 10, 2026 - the claim covers fees incurred from Jan. 20, 2020 - July 10, 2023.  Hattiesburg American

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Two medical cannabis bills passed the Legislature and are headed to the governor’s desk — one removes the concentrate cap and extends card validity for patients while the other lets doctors petition for new patient access.  WDAM
  • Lamar County Fire Services is holding Overland Search and Rescue training at the Lamar County Training Center today at 6 p.m. with sessions on March 26 at 6 p.m. and March 28 at 9 a.m., where trained firefighters from several counties will lead a woodland tracking exercise.  WDAM
  • Lampton residents have signed a petition demanding answers to rising water bills and failing sewer systems. The Water Association said it is fixing meter issues + installing 23 new pumps and tanks as repairs continue.  WDAM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Dan Edney, Mississippi state health officer since 2022 with over 30 years practicing in Vicksburg, is a top contender to lead the CDC; if confirmed, the state will soon look for a new officer to address high infant and maternal mortality.  WLBT

  • Riverdale defensive back Dre Otey committed to Mississippi State football on March 23 and reclassified to the class of 2026 to begin classes this fall; he chose the Bulldogs over other top schools after a second visit to Starkville.  Hattiesburg American
