EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Thursday, more than two dozen USM students held a protest to demand a zero-tolerance policy for sexual harassment and discrimination — the rule would bar students found responsible from staying at the school — organizer Kaitlyn Gooch said to help make the campus safer.  WDAM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • USM President Joe Paul was honored on Friday with the Service Member Patriot Award for his support of the National Guard and Reserve—nominated by a USM Foundation development officer who is also a National Guard member, his award underscores USM’s long commitment to student soldiers and employees. The award was presented by Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve to recognize outstanding employers who back those serving in the Guard and Reserve.  WDAM
  • Forrest County, Hattiesburg and Petal leaders met at the Emergency Operations Center to plan for a storm expected today from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.—road crews have fueled their equipment and safe rooms opened Friday at 10 p.m.—and officials urge those in manufactured homes to seek shelter.  WDAM

  • Danone has recalled 32-ounce bottles of Hazelnut and Cinnabon Classic Cinnamon Roll coffee creamers sold in Hattiesburg because they may spoil and make people sick; the best‐by dates are July 3rd and July 2nd, 2025 and consumers should throw them away if they find them at home.  Hattiesburg American
  • Fifty-three units of blood (donated on March 15) were collected in Hattiesburg for a McComb firefighter battling cancer (whose treatment is still ongoing) to help support his recovery.  WDAM

SPORTS NEWS

  • Oak Grove High School girls wrestling team earned three state champions when seniors Mariona Smith and Addison Wilson and junior Shykira Miller won titles in February—marking a historic achievement for the new sport. The team grew from four to 13 wrestlers in two seasons—hoping to inspire other local schools to start wrestling.  WDAM
  • USM opened Sun Belt Conference play with an 11-2 win Friday night at Pete Taylor Park, powered by Ozzie Pratt’s grand slam and JB Middleton’s 10 strikeouts over seven innings. The Golden Eagles improved to 13-5 with their fourth straight win as Old Dominion was held to just two runs.  WDAM
