  • Lesley Gilliam was in a car crash on Dec. 28 when her Goldendoodle Finnley broke free in Collins, and a week-long search by local residents near Baker’s Hill ended when he was found in an abandoned barn—reunited with his family and now wearing a new GPS collar.  Hattiesburg American

  • Hattiesburg police charged a second suspect in February for a shooting on 4th Street — investigators are reviewing evidence and questioning witnesses.  WDAM

CULTURE NEWS

  • A total lunar eclipse will be visible over Hattiesburg late Thursday night and into early Friday as the moon turns red (known as a blood moon). The peak occurs around 2 a.m., but clouds and rain may lessen the view while low-pressure weather and possible storms are in the forecast.  Hattiesburg American

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On March 13, 1965, Dr. Marion Myles accepted a teaching role at UMMC and became its first Black faculty member. She was later named assistant professor of pharmacology—an important milestone despite objections from some trustees.  Mississippi Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Mississippi letter carriers rallied to protest President Trump's proposal to shift control of the Postal Service—arguing that these changes could lead to delayed or stopped mail deliveries and job losses in rural areas. The carriers also warned that such shifts may harm local services like food drives and welfare checks, while the White House said there are no immediate plans for any changes.  Hattiesburg American
  • The City of Hattiesburg has begun its West Seventh Street Infrastructure Rehabilitation project to replace failing sewer lines, drainage systems, water mains and sidewalks from Providence Street to Main Street. Drivers may face road closures during construction—state and federal funds totaling $3.7 million support the upgrade of the city’s aging infrastructure.  WDAM
  • The Mississippi Legislature passed Senate Bill 2573 to create a new state tourism agency that will replace the current Division of Tourism in the Mississippi Development Authority— Gov. Tate Reeves must sign the bill and the agency could start operations in July as budget details are finalized after 43.7 million visitors in 2023.  WDAM
  • The Senate passed House Bill 1502 that bans intoxicating hemp but allows low-THC hemp beverages for adults, and the bill is now headed to conference for another vote. Lawmakers opposed the measure — noting that selling these products in stores remains controversial, which means further discussion will follow.  Hattiesburg American
