COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Advanced Pet Care donated a microchip scanner now set up outside Cattiesburg Cafe at 5268 Old Highway 11 to help reunite lost pets with their owners. The scanner is available 24 hours a day so pet owners can quickly check for registered information.  WDAM
  • The Downtown Hattiesburg Farmers Market began on March 12 at Town Square Park and will run every Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m., featuring fresh produce and handmade goods from local vendors (including food trucks added this season). Sponsored by the Downtown Hattiesburg Association, the market lets neighbors connect.  WDAM
  • Mississippi leaders proclaimed Girl Scout Week from March 12 through March 19 after Troop 4616 and State Rep. Hank Zuber drafted and submitted a resolution at the Capitol. The six girl scouts celebrated their girl-led effort in recognition of National Girl Scout Day by presenting a token Girl Scout pin.  WLBT

CRIME NEWS

  • Jones County sheriff said 82-year-old Nellie Rustin was found safe when her friend Buddy Rustin discovered her in the woods where they once played after a search involving family, neighbors, and emergency services from her home on Thomas Ed Rustin Road, and Nellie refused transport after being checked by medics.  WLBT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On March 11, the Mississippi Senate passed a teacher pay raise bill that increases salaries by $6,000 for all educators and adds $3,000 for special education teachers — the increases will spread over three years starting in July as negotiations with the House bill loom.  Hattiesburg American
  • Forrest County Agricultural High School secured $5.7M to expand its Career and Technical Education Center and add shop programs like welding, HVAC, and electrical + new training in advanced manufacturing and shipbuilding to help Brooklyn students prepare for in-demand jobs.  WDAM

  • Storms left over 50,000 people without power yesterday across Mississippi (Hinds County saw 6,686 outages), and forecasters warn a cold front will bring freezing temperatures and a chance of snow showers to parts of North Mississippi later this week.  Hattiesburg American

  • Former Ole Miss guard Sean Pedulla earned a game ball after scoring his first NBA points in the Clippers' 153-128 win over the Timberwolves on Wednesday, March 12.
