  • Daylight saving time starts Sunday, March 8, 2026, as clocks spring forward for residents—local restaurants like Denny's and Burger King are offering free food deals to help ease the shift.  Hattiesburg American
  • Outlaw Jeeps is partnering with the Hattiesburg Fire Department for a Benefit Jeep and Motorcycle Ride today to raise money for two injured firefighters. Registration begins at 9 a.m. at the Police and Fire Training Academy (53 Academy Drive) with a 50-mile ride starting at 11 a.m. through Forrest and Lamar Counties.  WDAM

  • The Oseola McCarty Museum opens today at 11 a.m. in the Sixth Street Museum District. Housed in McCarty’s former home moved in 2019, the museum preserves original details — like her kitchen and artifacts—to honor her legacy.  WLBT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • William Carey University is hosting a Young Authors Celebration where students meet published writers on campus. The event will foster creative writing among local scholars.  WDAM
  • On March 6, the Mississippi House education committee revived a bill that would raise public school teacher salaries by $5,000 and add extra increases for special education teachers and school counselors — the 500-page proposal also revises retirement age and service requirements, and House members voted unanimously in favor.  Hattiesburg American

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mississippi's 2026 turkey season now opens early on March 14 and runs until May 3. Youth hunters can start today, March 7, and most hunters must buy a new turkey stamp before hunting on public or private land (exempt groups apply).  Hattiesburg American
  • The Mississippi House passed SB 2103 on Friday morning, raising K-12 teacher pay by $5,000, special needs teacher pay by $3,000, and assistant teacher pay by $3,000 while correcting a 45-day holiday payroll delay. The bill now returns to the Senate for final approval.  WLBT

  • Frito-Lay announced on March 6 that it is recalling selected 8-oz bags of Miss Vickie’s Spicy Dill Pickle Potato Chips sold in Mississippi — the snacks may contain an undeclared milk allergen that can trigger serious reactions in dairy-allergic consumers.
