  • Ruby-throated hummingbirds fly 600 miles non-stop over the Gulf to reach top breeding grounds as researchers note that males may arrive ahead; locals can help by setting out feeders with a sugar+water mix as the birds are set to arrive in early March.  Hattiesburg American

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Neighbors reported trash dumping, foul smells, and explosions from a Petal home on West 2nd Ave on Feb. 3, and officials have given the squatting property 30 days to clean up the issues.  WDAM
  • The Mississippi House passed a mandatory deer harvest reporting bill that will require hunters to report all deer taken—helping collect the data needed to manage the state's deer herd and support its $1.2 billion hunting industry. The bill will now be reviewed by the Senate before it can become law.  Hattiesburg American
  • North Forrest Volunteer Fire Department reported a busy weekend handling several service calls — managing routine inspections and small emergencies across its area. The department remains alert as it continues essential operations to serve local residents.  WDAM

  • Mississippi State, Southern Miss and Ole Miss won their opening weekend series. Southern Miss set a record with 16,518 fans as its center fielder Joey Urban homered in a win — Mississippi State swept a doubleheader while Ole Miss clinched a series sweep at Swazye Field.  WLBT
