ECONOMY NEWS

  • A WalletHub study found that Mississippi residents spent the highest share of their incomes on groceries, even though food prices are among the nation's lowest. The study compared prices for 26 common grocery items (with median incomes) and showed that groceries made up 2.60% of household budgets.  Hattiesburg American
  • The opening of baseball season today is expected to boost local business revenue as fans flock to ballparks — local officials predict that increased game-day activity will lift spending at retail stores and restaurants.  WDAM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • First Place for Youth and Child Protection Services are helping foster children transition to adulthood by providing housing, education, and job support. The program, which serves 30 youth (ages 18 to 21) from Hattiesburg to Gulfport, marks its one-year anniversary and will expand its services statewide.  WLBT
  • Stone County Schools said construction of the new Stone High School campus is on track to open for the 2026-2027 school year; primary education buildings are scheduled to finish by early May while athletic facilities will be completed before fall football — all staying within a $30 million budget.  WDAM

  • No. 20 USM lost 5-1 to UC-Santa Barbara on Friday evening at Pete Taylor Park. USM trailed early, narrowed the gap in the eighth with Kyle Morrison's home run, but a two-run shot in the ninth sealed the win and the teams will meet again Saturday at noon.  WDAM
