CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ McCain Library curator Jennifer Brannock showed historical items from the Civil Rights Movement — including posters, buttons and papers — in the library’s protected Mississippiana Historical Manuscripts Collection. The collection also holds Freedom Schools records that tell local stories from 1964. WDAM
- ➤ RSJ Community Arts Center completed major upgrades funded by a $300,000 state arts grant, adding a new clay studio + dedicated kiln, ADA ramp, improved HVAC at the Black Box Theatre and renovated restrooms. Classes will begin using the updated facility in March. WDAM
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ After Winter Storm Fern hit north Mississippi on Jan. 24, federal officials have not yet approved direct aid requests as families still without power and repairs wait on both local and federal actions + state funding. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ University of Mississippi Medical Center plans a $250 million cancer center (near Hope Lodge) to bring NCI-level care to the community as it recruits top professionals following C Spire’s $5 million donation; construction dates are not set. Hattiesburg American
- ➤ A new vending machine is now dispensing free naloxone 24/7 near the University of Southern Mississippi at Fire Station No. 6 (3802 Montague Blvd.) to help address opioid overdoses. The machine is part of an initiative with the Mississippi Public Health Institute using opioid settlement funds. WLBT
