- ➤ Earlier this week the House passed the Education Freedom Act, a 446 page plan to use state funds for private school enrollment with a 61 to 59 vote. Senator Joey Fillingane warned that its provisions and details may slow Senate action as lawmakers consider streamlining transfers + expanding homeschool participation. WDAM

- ➤ Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day — a federal holiday honoring the slain civil rights leader. Mail, banks, and some delivery services are closed or operating on modified schedules while residents participate in community service projects to remember his legacy. Hattiesburg American

- ➤ On Saturday, Jan. 17, Ole Miss (Rebels) defeated Mississippi State (Bulldogs) 68-67 at Humphrey Coliseum when freshman Patton Pinkins sealed the win with a buzzer-beating jumper. SuperTalk Mississippi Media
