  • Edward’s Street Fellowship’s food pantry saw record demand in November during the shutdown and continues to serve high numbers in the new year — Monday and Tuesday the center averaged one bag of food per minute during 10-hour service and welcomes donations from neighbors.  WDAM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mississippi House Speaker Jason White unveiled the Mississippi Education Freedom Act on Wednesday to expand school choice by allowing taxpayer funds for private tuition vouchers, easing public school transfers and enabling charter schools to open statewide (the proposal aims to boost educational options for all students while preserving local control).  Mississippi Today

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Deer season in Mississippi continues with most units ending on Jan. 31 and the Southeast DMU extending archery hunts until Feb. 15 — the department urges hunters to meet bag limits to curb a record-high deer count.  Hattiesburg American

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Wednesday morning, Oloh Volunteer Fire Department received a new firetruck that passed a three‑hour pump test by the Mississippi State Rating Bureau. The $440K engine has a 1,500 GPM pump (with a 1,500‑gallon tank) and will be in service by week’s end as part of a new replacement plan.  WDAM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Heather Darby of Pigment-Permanent Cosmetics now offers areola tattooing tailored for each breast cancer survivor after treatment. One patient said the procedure restored her confidence (completing her journey) and helped her feel like a person again.  WDAM

SPORTS NEWS

  • In the next three to four weeks, the county will start building a new multipurpose field at the Sportsplex for Pee Wee Football, soccer and outdoor concerts. This project is part of a nearly $3 million investment to boost local amenities + foster industry, with completion expected by next fall.  WDAM
  • Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding impressed critics with his team’s blowout win over Tulane and a Sugar Bowl victory on Jan. 1, and the Rebels will face Miami in the Fiesta Bowl as Golding’s strong game management and player retention turn early doubts into local confidence.  Mississippi Today
  • Forty-four girls flag football teams in the Pine Belt are preparing to play Thursday night games with five away and one home contest, as coaches at Oak Grove High and Perry Central set plans for drills & offer a flag football clinic on Jan. 10 to boost local talent.  WDAM
